When a surgical condition compromises your companion’s comfort or abilities, Dr Marina McConkey and her team are here to help. As a veterinary surgeon, Dr McConkey will work alongside you and your primary care veterinarian to directly address the problem. At ELVH we are committed to providing personalized solutions to support your pet’s wellbeing.

WHAT IS A VETERINARY SURGEON?

A veterinary surgeon, similar to a human medical specialist, is a veterinarian that has undergone extensive surgical training following veterinary school. A veterinary surgeon may also be known as a “board certified surgeon” or a “Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons”. Veterinary surgeons are uniquely qualified to work with your primary care veterinarian to provide the very best in surgical care.

At a minimum, these individuals have completed a 1 year general veterinary internship followed by a 3 year residency that meets the guidelines set forth by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS). During their residency, these veterinarians receive hands-on state of the art training in the diagnosis and management of surgical conditions. Furthermore, they must also contribute to the advancement of veterinary science by performing research that is published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal. Following successful completion of their residency, these veterinarians must then pass a rigorous examination prior to receiving their Diplomate status.
