WHAT IS A VETERINARY SURGEON?

A veterinary surgeon, similar to a human medical specialist, is a veterinarian that has undergone extensive surgical training following veterinary school. A veterinary surgeon may also be known as a “board certified surgeon” or a “Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons”. Veterinary surgeons are uniquely qualified to work with your primary care veterinarian to provide the very best in surgical care.

At a minimum, these individuals have completed a 1 year general veterinary internship followed by a 3 year residency that meets the guidelines set forth by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS). During their residency, these veterinarians receive hands-on state of the art training in the diagnosis and management of surgical conditions. Furthermore, they must also contribute to the advancement of veterinary science by performing research that is published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal. Following successful completion of their residency, these veterinarians must then pass a rigorous examination prior to receiving their Diplomate status.

PHONE CONSULTATIONS

  • If you have questions about a case that you would like to discuss with Dr. McConkey prior to referral (or regarding a surgical case of your own) please call 250-658-5922 from Monday to Thursday. We endeavour to be available as quickly as possible for you, but depending on our schedule you may have to leave a message. If your call is urgent, please ensure you tell our reception team.

REFERRALS

  • Fill out a referral form online at www.elvh.ca/surgery
You will have the opportunity to attach all necessary documents (i.e. recent bloodwork, Please biopsy results, radiographs, medical records, etc) directly to the form.
  • A team member will contact you if any documents are missing or if any further information is required.
  • Dr. McConkey will call to discuss the referral with you prior to the team scheduling the appointment to ensure that we are working hand in hand to meet your expectations for the case.
  • We typically perform initial consultations on Thursdays with surgery scheduled for the following week. This means we do not typically perform elective surgery on the same day as the initial consultation. However, we can work with clients who are ready to move forward expeditiously to schedule consultations such that surgery can follow quickly. Likewise, we will work to ensure urgent cases are evaluated and offered surgery as quickly as possible.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

  • Following our discussion with you, a team member will reach out directly to the client to book an appointment for a consultation.
  • We will notify you of the date and time for the scheduled appointment.
A discharge summary report of the consultation will be sent to both you and the client within 24 hours of the appointment.
  • If there were any major deviations from the expected outcome of the consultation Dr. McConkey will call immediately following the consultation to discuss these with you.
  • If the client elects to pursue surgery we will schedule an appointment. We will notify you of the scheduled surgery date.

SURGERY

Dr McConkey will contact you following surgery to update you on your patient’s progress (via your indicated communication preference – phone, email, or fax)

  • If appropriate, patients will be discharged on the evening of surgery. We are able to provide overnight hospitalization for stable patients that require continued pain management following surgery. However, our practice is not typically staffed 24 hours a day. Therefore, for overnight hospitalization we can offer intermittent checks by a veterinarian combined with video monitoring of patients. Alternatively, we can offer supervision by a registered veterinary technician (with our veterinary surgeon available on call) for an additional fee. If a patient is unstable and requires closely monitored overnight care, transfer to a 24-hour care facility will be arranged (either Central Victoria Veterinary Hospital [CVVH] or Westcoast Animal Veterinary Emergency Specialty Hospital [WAVES]). The likelihood of requirement for overnight veterinary care, as well as the overnight care options, will be discussed with the client during the pre-surgery appointment.
  • You will receive a written summary of the surgical procedure, client instructions, medications, and expectations for rechecks and recovery, on the day the patient is discharged.
  • Recheck appointments will be recommended and scheduled at the time of discharge. You will be notified of any future booked appointments.

RECHECKS

  • Dr. McConkey prefers to see all of her own rechecks following surgery.
  • However, we recognize that clients may prefer to follow up with you for their rechecks, or you may prefer to see these cases back to manage directly in the post-operative period. In this case, Dr. McConkey will contact you about her specific concerns regarding your patient for these rechecks.
  • We ask that any repeat imaging be shared with us so we can document radiographic healing, for example.
  • Both you and the client will receive a written summary of the recheck appointment within 24 hours of that visit.
